All the lonely people,
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people,
Where do they all belong?

~ from Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles

We see them on the streets, cocooned in doorways, pushing overloaded shopping carts, standing on corners announcing their troubles on cardboard signs. Old, young, men, women.

       Who are they?

       Where did they come from?

What circumstances put them on the street?

and most importantly:  What keeps them there?

The Eleanor Rigby Project will introduce you to the real people behind the homeless facade. You will study the facts, examine the stereotyping placed on those who are homeless and be introduced to people who live on the streets.

And after all the facts and emotions have settled you will be challenged to ask yourself why we all have a strange feeling of discomfort each time we see a homeless person, what you can do to help and the truth behind the old adage:

"There, but for the grace of God, go I"

  JOIN OUR CLASS!

This is an online collaborative project for middle school students from around the globe. The focus of our project is learning about those who find themselves living on the street. The Eleanor Rigby Project will help students examine not only the people behind the name "homeless", they will examine their own attitudes and biases towards these people. By participating in a dialogue about what part we can play in helping those on the street find their true home, project participants will move closer to the understanding that:

"Poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty."           (Mother Teresa)

Classes may complete as many parts of this project as they choose to. Each class will be encouraged to submit their project work for posting on the Eleanor Rigby Project web site.

Those interested in joining "The Eleanor Rigby" should contact project coordinator, Brenda Dyck .
