I'M LEADING. IS ANYONE FOLLOWING?

LAURA SECORD

BY KATIE

During this unit we have been studying Canadian government and researching what makes a good leader. Here are some traits of a good leader:

If you want to be a good leader, you have to be loyal to your team, party or group of         people you are working with. If you are committed to someone else, no one will want to follow you when they find out. If you do this then you don't deserve to have any followers. That is why I think loyalty is important.

Perseverance is another good quality towards being a good leader. If you are going through a tough time physically, mentally or emotionally and you lose your temper, no one will follow you because they now know you can't keep your patience. So have patience!

If you want to be a good leader you must be honest with your group. For example, if you say you are going to do something, people will follow you. But if you never do it, then soon your followers will disappear in front of you.

When you do the unexpected, people will follow you because you are so creative. If one of your ideas don't work, don't get discouraged and don't start to do the ordinary because that is not where your followers came from.

Don't think you are a big shot when something goes right in your group, even when it was your idea. You and your group put it into action. Just because you are the leader you shouldn't take all the credit. You are their leader because they thought you wouldn't do that.

A courageous leader is a good one because you are not afraid to try new things. If you are worried about losing your followers because of doing so, you will definitely lose all of them because people are attracted to courageous people.

A good leader is someone who cares about their followers. You must do this or else when something happens to one of your followers, you aren't there for them. Then when something happens to you, no one will be in sight. People need a caring leader.

Now I will tell you about a great leader and the saver of a country...Laura Secord!

Laura Secord was the person who saved Canada from the War of 1812. She was born in Massachusetts, USA but her father did not want to live under the American government. Laura married James Secord. He went to fight in the battle of Queenston Heights and wounded his leg and shoulder. When saving Canada, Laura went through many obstacles. We should be proud of the work she did for our country. She also thought so much for our country that she, as a woman, fought for it.

LOYALTY

Laura Secord was very loyal to Canada during the War of 1812. If it hadn't been for her loyalty we might be part of the USA right now. She probably was and is one of Canadas' best leaders.

PERSEVERANCE

being a good leader means having perseverance. Laura Secord was probably about to give up when she was going through all the swamps and marshes and meeting the Indians who ended up helping her out in the end. I certainly would be. I think we can look back at her for ideas of what to do during hard times.

DO THE UNEXPECTED

This young woman did the unexpected by going through pain of cuts or burns and going across part of Ontario barefoot just to tell the argent that the Americans were going to ambush them, so that she and her country would not have to live under American government.

HUMILITY

Laura Secord was a good leader because she showed humility after the war. Her great work was not heard of until eight years after she died. She did this beacuse she did not want the Americans to turn on her and get her into something she didn't want to be in. This shows she thought of others first.

COURAGE

A good leader is courageous. Laura Secord stood up for her country, as all good leaders should. She had to have  alove for Canada and the courage to come all the way from the home she loved so much, to save and go through what she did. That's what a good leader does.

I have just told you about a great leader who saved the country we're living in right now.
