We had the privilege of having an American class participating in our project. DJ Thomas and her Grade 6-8 class at Heritage Prep School, Orlando, Florida were pleased to join alongside Canadian students as they examined leaders from their own country. As you read through the student's writing, be sure to click on the pictures so you can view see the title pages these students made for their report.

Scottie Pippen
My
Criteria for a Good Leader:
1- Upbeat, Happy (so players would have fun)
2- Serious, Strict (So players will listen)
3- Optimistic, Looking for the Best
4- Brave, Fearless
5- Fair (Gives equal opportunity)
6- Good Listener (If you have a question, he will listen)
7- Moral (Conforms to strict standards)
Because of these reasons, I picked Scottie Pippen, as he matched my criteria.
He was born in Hamburg, Arkansas in 1965. He played for the Seattle Super
Sonics. He then got transferred to the Chicago Bulls. They say he was one of
the most skillful players. He and Michael Jordan won six championships during
their career with the Bulls.
In conclusion, I learned that leadership is a great responsibility, and you
should never give up on your dreams.

Steve
Young
49-ers
Steve Young is the most valuable player on his football team, selected number
ten over-all by Los Angeles Express in the draft.
He is a very important football player. Steve Young was an award winner as
Nation's Top Quarterback Consensus First Team All Americans (1983) and a
two-time NFL Most Valuable Player (1992, 1994). He was named to seven Pro
Bowls. He threw 300-plus yards in an NFL record six straight games, and set
NFL single season record with a 112.8 Passer Rating. He made Throw Records,
and six touchdown passes in the Super Bowl XXIX, and led in Completion
Percentage five times (1992, 1994). As he entered 2000, he ranked second in
career rushing yards for a quarterback (Randall Cunningham, 4,741).
In conclusion, I chose Steve Young because he is focused on what he does,
like when he sticks to his football game. He is brave, and not afraid to get
hurt. He is fair, and does not act like he is "all that!" in football.
On top
of all that, he is true to his religion of Mormonism, and is a good family
man.

"Neil
Armstrong"
My Criteria for a Good Leader:
1-Good Listener
2- Notices Accomplishments
3- Fair, and Diligent
4- Honest
5- Brave
6- Focused
7- Self-controlled, Peaceful
These are some of the qualities we look for in a good leader, like Neil
Armstrong. Neil Armstrong was born in 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was an
American pilot for the U.S. Navy, and he was the first man to walk on the
moon. That is the main thing he is remembered for. He was very brave to go to
the moon like that. To get to where he was in life he had to be a good
listener, since it could be a catastrophe if he didn't pay attention, He had
to have all the other qualities I listed or he wouldn't have the respect of
his fellow workers, or the rest of the world who watched him.

Flo
Hyman
My
first criteria for a good leader is being serious! If you play around, you
could do something wrong. For example, if you play around on the volleyball
court you could miss the ball and the other side would score the point and
that wouldn't be too great.
My second criteria is being brave! If you are brave and have confidence you
won't be scared of that big crowd you play in front of! If you are scared,
you could be scared to hit the ball.
My third criteria is being focused! If you stay focused on the game and what
the coach says then you could win the game.
My fourth criteria is having self-control! If you keep control of your
attitude of winning (or losing) you won't get in trouble! So keep a good
attitude during the game.
My fifth criteria is being a good listener! Listen to your coach! You will
learn more than you think. If you don't listen, how will you know your
positions, or how to hit the ball right.
My sixth criteria is being diligent! To get to play all the sports you must
be diligent in your school work. You can't play unless you get good grades!
My seventh criteria is being honest! Don't lie to someone if you do something
wrong. Just tell the truth! Believe me, they will find out sooner or later,
so get it out of you and don't lie!
Flo Hyman was very diligent! In 1987, the Women's Sports Foundation created
the Flo Hyman Award, which is presented annually to the woman athlete with
Hyman's "dignity, spirit, and commitment to excellence."
I think she was also brave to go through volleyball rankings. The US team
stayed near the top of International Volleyball Rankings while Hyman, a
high-jumping 6 ft. 5 in. athlete, developed into one of the world's top
players.
I think she was also very focused on her skills, because she worked very hard
to get that silver medal for the United States women's team in 1984, in Los
Angeles, helping to draw attention to the United States.
She was very serious during games! She didn't play around and she was serious
with the game, and paid attention and did a great job!
I think she was also a good listener, to learn all that you must learn about
volleyball to play so well. She must have listened to her coach.
So you can see that Flo Hyman met all my criteria.
She was a volleyball player who led the United States Women's Team toa Silver
Medal at the 1984 Olympic Games! Flo Hyman was born in Inglewood, California.
She began playing volleyball at Inglewood's Morning High School. She
continued playing volleyball at the college level while attending the
University of Houston from 1974 to 1977. She joined the U.S. Nationals team
in 1974 and participated in every major competition for which the U.S. team
qualified during her ten years with the squad. Hyman and the U.S. team
qualified for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. She died in 1986, at the age of
31, from the effects of Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the
muscular and skeletal system.
A leader is very important, as you see! People are following you, so be
careful what you do!

My Friend, Crystal
My Criteria for a Good Leader:
• Good Listener
• Fair
• Honest
• Focused
• Peaceful
• Moral
• Diligent
Criteria 1- Good Listener: My first criteria for a leader is that they are a
good listener.
It benefits the whole group to have a good listener.
Criteria 2- Fair: One important quality I look for in a good leader is their
fairness. Being fair is important because they need to treat everyone the
same. A good leader should not show favoritism.
Criteria 3- Honest: Honesty is a very important quality in a good leader. If
they weren't honest then nobody would listen to them, because they wouldn't
know if they were telling the truth or not.
Criteria 4- Focused: Keeping your focus is important in leadership positions.
A good leader needs to have their eye on the goal and know what they are
working towards.
Criteria 5- Peaceful: A good leader should always handle a situation calmly.
Criteria 6- Moral: A good leader is someone who will not fall into
temptation. A leader will have standards and live up to them.
Criteria 7- Diligent: A good leader is diligent. If they are not diligent,
they are probably lazy and no one wants to follow a lazy person.
My friend Crystal is a senior at our school. She is a leader in our church
youth group. Crystal was born in February of 1983. She started attending our
school when she was two years old. She became a born-again Christian when she
was six years old, at her grandmother's house. She's been on the National
Honor Society for five years, and is currently the President. She is very
involved in school and is the editor of the yearbook. She plays sports and
she displays a Christian attitude. Her favorite color is blue.
When people go and talk to Crystal she listens to them and gives them good
advice. Everybody can believe her because she's always honest. Crystal is
fair when she baby-sits. She doesn't favor anyone. She is very focused.
Crystal knows what she wants to do with her life. She is very diligent... No
one has to tell her to do things more than once.
Leadership is someone who sets a good example to their classmates and takes
charge. Being a leader means you must be a good listener, fair, honest,
focused, peaceful, moral, and diligent. To be a leader, you can't be a
follower. One of the most important traits in a leader is their faithfulness
to church. A leader should not only lead in school and sports, but also in
church. A good leader should set a good Christian example. It is important to
choose a leader with these qualities. If you choose the wrong person to
follow then you will not become a good leader. You should find someone who
you look up to and admire.

My
Leader is Christina Aguilera.
Christina was very brave to go on stage in front of so many people. I have
done it before, but I haven't done it in front of so many people. Christina
is very focused. I mean she finished high school by mail and she also has
enlarged her vocals and even more. Even when people said she couldn't do it
she stayed focused on her goal to be famous. She's honest, too, about she's
asked about her love life, what she does for fun, and she always tells the
interviewer what they want to know. You know, it's always good to know that
there's a serious side about superstars... Like in Christina's prom, when
nobody danced to her song, she stayed serious, but sad inside. Christina's a
good listener because she never refuses her fans. Christina worked ten years
to accomplish being a famous singer.
When Christina Aguilera was 19 years old she had a CD out called "Genie in
a
Bottle." Here are some of her singles: "I Turn to You,"
"What a Girl Wants."
"Come on Over," and "Reflection." Christina won a Grammy for
New Artist of
the Year and she also has a boyfriend who is a jazz dancer.
I have learned that stars are not perfect, even if they look like it, because
behind all that make-up there's a real person. I have always wanted to be an
actress and a singer, but I don't want to look perfect.
