"A Photographer needs a short circuit between his brain and his fingertips...You must be ready to catch the right split second, because if you miss, the pictures may be gone forever."                        ~ Alfred Einenstaedt; 1969

JOIN OUR CLASS AS WE EXPLORE THE POWER OF AN IMAGE

An exceptional image has the power to not only grab our attention  but to cause us to change. Our views on social issues like famine, war and discrimination can be refaced by the time spent viewing a photograph.

In "Freeway to the Heart " students will examine photographs that rocked the people who viewed them. They will learn that photographs can have  a life beyond the moment they were taken by prompting social change. Students will seek to create  photographs  that give wings to important  messages  like "Every person is valuable", "All children deserve a safe place to live" or " World peace is worth the effort it takes to keep it". Armed with their message, students will be challenged to uncover concrete ways they can flesh out their photographs' message in their world.

"You put your camera around your neck along with putting on your shoes, and there it is, an appendage of the body that shares your life with you. The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera."

  JOIN OUR CLASS!

This is an online collaborative project for middle school students from around the globe. The focus of our project is to learn about the powerful potential that an image (photograph) has in implementing social change in our society. This project will help students discover their own voice and learn how to use photography and writing to communicate their message to the world. It is our hope that many people will view our international photo gallery.

Classes will complete as many parts of this project as they choose to. We ask them to submit their final photographs electronically along with a brief explanation about the message their photograph is trying to communicate and what action they hope expressing their message might provoke in those around them.  We will post the work on our project web page. Those interested in joining "Freeway to the Heart" should contact project coordinator, Brenda Dyck .
